Basildon Borough is situated in South Essex, just 30 miles east of London. The borough covers some 42.5 square miles and includes the towns of Basildon, Billericay and Wickford. Around 70% of the borough is rural with large areas of open farmland and scattered rural developments.

The town of Basildon is regarded as a key economic hub with the main areas of employment being engineering, research and development, distribution and financial services.  Basildon is also the second biggest economy in the Thames Gateway, outside of Canary Wharf.

Basildon Council is leading an ambitious and dynamic regeneration programme which includes a multi-million pound redevelopment plans for both Basildon and Wickford town centres, as well as a major regeneration of the surrounding housing estates and the local retail centres of Pitsea and Laindon.

Recent major projects have included the construction of a flagship £38m Basildon Sporting Village (opens new window) which was used as a training centre for the London 2012 Olympics.
