What is an operating system (OS)?

An operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware (peripherals such as a keyboard, a mouse and touch pad), software resources, and provides common services for computer applications and programs. An operating system typically starts up when a device powers on, presenting a screen (home screen / desktop) with icons or tiles that present information and provide application access. Market leading operating systems are Microsoft Windows, Android (developed by Google) and Apple's iOS.
