Accompanied by Councillor Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council, Basildon's Chief Executive, Kim Bromley-Derry, representatives from '1Up Collective', and the council's Anti-Social Behaviour and Community Safety Team, the High Sheriff explored Basildon's proactive approach to reduce Domestic Abuse, and Anti-Social Behaviour in the borough.

During the visit, the High Sheriff also expressed his support for the council's ongoing commitment to address Violence Against Women and Girls, including the launch of the Women's Safety Charter in November.

The Charter aims to bring together local businesses and community organisations who have pledged to become safe spaces for women and girls. 88% of women spoken to stated they feel unsafe in our towns and on our streets after dark. The Charter will offer support, refuge and safety for those experiencing or at risk of violence, or feeling unsafe, to create a strong and powerful network against violence and abuse.

The initiative continues to grow ahead of its formal launch in November, with businesses across the borough designating spaces for those experiencing or at risk of violence. Local businesses that wish to be a part of this important scheme should contact communitysafety@basildon.gov.uk

As part of this commitment, the Basildon Centre is now designated a 'J9 safe space' to help those fleeing domestic abuse to seek help at the earliest opportunity. The initiative aims to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals in crisis can seek help and access vital resources from Basildon Council and its partners.

Victims of domestic abuse can visit the Basildon Centre, St. Martin's Square, Basildon, SS14 1DL and quote 'J9' for immediate support.

Councillor Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council said: "Reducing anti-social behaviour and the awful consequences it has for victims remains an important priority for us. ASB has such a powerful impact that when it's tackled, the whole community is lifted. Combatting it takes time, energy and partnerships and I welcome the High Sheriff's endorsement of this mission.

"Earlier this year I pledged to keep the reduction of domestic violence, sexual abuse, slavery and violence against women and girls at the forefront of our agenda. These important initiatives are significant steps in reaffirming this commitment to address this urgent issue."
