Councillors met with officers to confirm the Basildon Centre's J9 status at a special event on Friday 1 November 2024.

Victims of domestic abuse can visit the Basildon Centre, St. Martin's Square, Basildon, SS14 1DL and quote 'J9' for immediate support. Members of staff are trained to recognise, respond and refer anyone who is experiencing domestic abuse at the earliest opportunity.

The J9 Initiative is named in memory of Janine Mundy who tragically lost her life in 2003. Janine used to sign her text messages off with the signature, J9. The initiative was started by her family and the local police in Cornwall, where she lived.

The initiative aims to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals in crisis can seek help and access vital resources from Basildon Council and its partners. This year, Basildon Council has supported over 300 families/individuals who have experienced domestic abuse - providing advice, emotional support, assistance with securing refuge placements or alternative safe accommodation, and liaison with internal and external agencies.

Councillor Adele Brown, Deputy Leader of Basildon Council, joined the launch event on Friday morning: "This administration has made a commitment to tackling domestic abuse, with a dedicated champion to bring key issues to light. Today's launch is a testament to the hard work of members and officers who are showing victims of domestic abuse that they will be seen, heard and supported."

Councillor Melissa McGeorge, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Enforcement said: "No one should suffer in silence. The J9 Initiative is crucial in ensuring that victims have a safe space to seek help and are met with understanding and support. By working together with local partners, we can create a stronger network of assistance for those affected by domestic abuse."

Councillor Victoria Joseph, Deputy Mayor of Basildon, and Ending Domestic and Sexual Abuse Champion, said: "Domestic abuse has a devastating and lasting impact on the victim and their family. The Basildon Centre is a designated safe space that will provide a sanctuary for those facing domestic abuse, ensuring they have immediate access to the support and resources they need to begin their journey towards safety and recovery."
