Book Clinical and Hazardous Waste Disposal

Clinical Waste

If you or a member of your family is being treated at home or self medicating for a medical condition, the waste produced is considered clinical and could be hazardous.

Clinical waste should never be disposed of in your general weekly rubbish and recycling sacks.

Examples of clinical waste include:

  • Human or animal tissue
  • Blood or bodily fluids
  • Swabs and/or dressings
  • Syringes, needles and other sharp instruments
  • Excretions
  • Drugs and other pharmaceutical products

Clinical Waste Collections

Basildon Council offers a domestic clinical waste collection service for all eligible customers who live in the borough and self administer medical treatment. If treatment is administered by a medical professional e.g. a nurse, it is their responsibility to dispose of all clinical waste, you will therefore not be entitled to clinical waste collections.

To set up an arrangement for clinical waste collections please complete the online form below. Once you submit the form you will be contacted by our clinical waste contractor GB Holdings to set up a collection schedule.

Other Hazardous Waste Items

Certain types of waste may be classed as hazardous and therefore cannot be recycled by us..

These include:

  • Asbestos
  • Pesticides
  • Chemicals and other toxic substances
  • Poisons

If you have any household waste which you think may be hazardous please see Love Essex or call Essex County Council on 0345 603 7625.

IMPORTANT: Disposing of asbestos

PLEASE NOTE: Essex County Council recycling centres cannot accept asbestos or hazardous waste of any description. However, you can make a request for bonded asbestos (asbestos cement) to be collected and disposed of by Essex County Council. They will provide a subsidy on collection costs per household per financial year, which will be deducted from your bill before payment if you qualify for the subsidy. To request a collection please visit www.loveessex.org/disposing-of-asbestos.
