In the news: Cabinet to consider new lease for East Square cinema

Basildon Council's Cabinet is set to consider signing a lease with Vue Entertainment Ltd to become the new operator of the cinema in East Square. This follows the decision from Vue's governing board to agree to the terms of the lease and continue working with the council.

Once complete, the cinema's largest screen will hold more than 300 cinemagoers, with nine other screens showing the latest films, plus VIP and Recliner seating. The East Square development is also home to Kaspa's Desserts, Nando's and Orleto Lounge, offering a variety of choice for visitors.

The decision to sign a lease will be considered at a meeting of Basildon Council's Cabinet on Thursday 14 March and follows agreement by Basildon Council's planning committee to update the signage on the building.

Councillor Craig Rimmer, Cabinet Member for Economic Stimulus and Tourism said: "I am delighted to hear we have approval from Vue's board and now we can consider the deal and make a final decision. I know residents and cinemagoers have been waiting patiently for news on the opening and now we can progress this at pace.

"The opening of the cinema will be a landmark event that will start the economic regeneration of the town centre. It will become a real destination for people to spend time with families and friends and enjoy the entertainment."

Councillor Andrew Baggott, Leader of the Council said: "Tomorrow we will be considering a landmark deal that will see the new cinema open following a comprehensive competitive process. I look forward to welcoming Vue to Basildon to provide entertainment for all of our residents.

"This will kick start the economic regeneration of Basildon, providing entertainment and night time activity in the heart of our town centre."

In Summer 2023, Basildon Council began the marketing process to secure a new operator for the cinema at East Square, with all of the leading cinema operators in the UK being invited to submit an offer. A number of parties registered their interest. Following engagement with various operators, the council received a final offer from Vue Entertainment Ltd.
