Registering a death - You must register the death in the registration district where it occurred. Essex Registration Service have eight district offices, as well as local offices and outstations where you can register a death.
The registration process is straightforward and only takes about twenty to thirty minutes. Before you attend the Register Office please make sure you have all the information you will need.
For details of your local registration office, who can register a death and the documentation required, visit Essex County Council - Register a Death.
Opening times: All cemeteries allow public access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Council offers the following range of burial plots for sale:
Burial plots can only be bought after a death has occurred. Burial plots in Basildon Council cemeteries cannot be pre-purchased before death occurs.
Burials can take place on any weekday, except on bank holidays. Please talk to your funeral director or contact our Cemeteries Officer to discuss any specific requirements. See contact details below.
Most often when a death occurs the funeral director will help make the necessary arrangements to buy a burial plot. Some people however prefer to make their own arrangements to buy a burial plot at the time of planning the funeral. This can be organised by completing and submitting an online request to purchase a burial plot or by contacting our Cemeteries Officer who will be happy to advise. See contact details below.
Our burial plots are sold with an exclusive right of burial for 100 years, such plots are known as purchased graves. We advise that all purchased graves have an appointed owner. A family member can take over the ownership should the appointed owner become deceased. To arrange a change in ownership please contact our Cemeteries Officer who will happy help. See contact details below.
An ashes interment can be arranged with us independently of an undertaker. For details please contact our Cemeteries Officer who will be happy to advise. See contact details below.
Terms and conditions allow the owner of the burial plot to construct a full headstone and kerb set after burial has taken place, along with a small 'garden ' area in front of the headstone. All memorials of this type must be built on a concrete base or landing. Please see the cemetery regulations for further advice.
