In the News: Nearly 260 pensioners benefit from Basildon Council's Warm Homes initiative

Last September, Basildon Council launched its Warm Homes Guarantee, committing £100,000 to assist 1,000 pensioner households with energy bills during the winter months.

So far, 259 pensioner households have received a £100 Warm Homes Guarantee payment, totalling £25,900 in support.

The initiative began with visits to all 47 council-owned sheltered housing schemes, along with events held at local libraries, community centres, and via an Outreach bus, ensuring pensioners across the borough were informed about the assistance available to them.

Cllr Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council, commented:

"All in all, we have supported over 400 pensioner households and almost 1,000 pensioners throughout this winter as a result of our schemes.

"This initiative is all about community. I'm thrilled to see families, friends, and neighbours coming together to make sure no Basildon pensioner who is eligible misses out on this support, ensuring they don't have to face the winter alone."

In addition to the Warm Homes Guarantee, hundreds of residents have been guided on how to apply for Pension Credit or advised on extra support options such as Housing Benefit, Council Tax support, Discretionary Housing Payments, and assistance from the Fuel Poverty helpline.

At outreach events, 90 pensioner households were helped with applications for Pension Credit and Winter Fuel Allowance. Since October 2024, the council reached out to 493 pensioners whose benefits suggested they should also be claiming Pension Credit. As a result, 97 of these residents are now receiving both Pension Credit and their Winter Fuel Allowance.

Cllr Callaghan added: "I'm incredibly proud of the work we've done in Basildon to help vulnerable pensioners stay warm this winter. While we've made great progress, the fact that so many pensioners have been supported in claiming benefits they weren't aware they were entitled to shows we're on the right track."
