In the News: Council secures court injunction against Wickford tenant for anti-social behaviour
Basildon Council has successfully obtained an injunction against a Wickford tenant due to persistent anti-social behaviour. The Court also issued a ban on the tenant's visitor, prohibiting them from entering the area.
The action follows multiple reports of disruptive behaviour from both the tenant and their visitor, including shouting, swearing, physical violence, verbal abuse, excessive noise, and the continual use of cannabis. The tenant's actions had a significant negative impact on the surrounding neighbours, prompting the council to take legal measures.
On Monday, March 24, 2025, Basildon County Court granted an interim injunction, which prohibits the tenant and their visitors from engaging in unlawful activities, such as drug use and cannabis consumption, causing intimidating or threatening behaviour, or creating noise disturbances between 10.30pm and 8am. Additionally, the court issued a 12-month banning order for the visitor.
Councillor Melissa McGeorge, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, stated:
"We are dedicated to creating safer communities and will continue working alongside the police to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. Our zero-tolerance approach to such behaviour remains firm.
"Despite our Anti-Social Behaviour officers offering support and urging this individual to consider the impact of their actions on their neighbours, they continued to disregard these concerns. This ruling serves as a clear warning: we will take further action if the conditions are ignored."
Any breach of these conditions will allow Basildon Council to seek legal action, which could result in fines or imprisonment. Furthermore, a breach would provide grounds for the council to seek possession of the property.
Basildon Council remains committed to taking firm action against those who put the safety of the community at risk. Ensuring a safer environment for local residents is a top priority in 2025, and this legal action is just the beginning.
We encourage anyone who experiences anti-social behaviour in Basildon Borough to report it via the council's website - Report Anti-Social Behaviour - Basildon.
