In the news: Basildon tenant evicted for persistent Anti-Social Behaviour

A Basildon Council tenant from Langdon Hills was evicted on 3 March 2025 at Basildon County Court due to ongoing anti-social behaviour that had caused significant distress to neighbours.

The eviction followed the council's successful application for an Absolute Possession Order, which was granted due to a combination of substantial rent arrears and anti-social behaviour, including loud music, verbal abuse, poor property conditions, racial abuse, and threatening behaviour.

ASB (Anti-Social Behaviour) Officers had received numerous complaints regarding the tenant's conduct. Despite multiple offers of support, the tenant chose not to engage with the officers. In the months leading up to the eviction, the situation escalated, with anti-social behaviour directed towards both neighbours and council officers. As a result, the council sought an injunction with an attached power of arrest, which was granted by the court.

Councillor Melissa McGeorge, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, commented: "We are committed to making our communities safer and will continue to collaborate with the police to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour. When a tenant's actions disrupt the lives of other residents, it is crucial to understand that a council property is a privilege, not a right.

"Despite several attempts at support, this tenant not only refused assistance but also intensified their behaviour toward both other tenants and officers. Such conduct is unacceptable, and I fully support the court's decision. The property will now be made available for another family on our housing waiting list."

Residents experiencing anti-social behaviour in Basildon Borough are encouraged to report incidents via the council's website: Report Anti-Social Behaviour - Basildon.
