In the news: Councillors to Introduce Transformative Westgate Masterplan for Basildon Town Centre

Ambitious proposals will transform the recently acquired retail park and kickstart regeneration of the town.

Next week, Councillors will meet to review a significant update on the Westgate Masterplan, outlining proposals for a major redevelopment of the western edge of Basildon Town Centre.

Initial proposals have been developed in conjunction with Karakusevic Carson Architects (KCA), appointed by the council in September 2024. These will be discussed at a meeting of Basildon Council's Cabinet on Monday 9 December 2024.

The paper highlights the potential for the site, acquired by the council in June 2024, to drive regeneration by introducing new housing, a landmark hotel, and revitalized public spaces. The plan aims to enhance the area's cultural, economic, and environmental profile while creating a welcoming gateway to the town.

The masterplanners have set out a number of key principles to holistically guide development plans for the site to provide:

  • A welcoming and thriving gateway
  • An enhanced culture and leisure offer
  • New green links and attractive public spaces
  • New and inclusive housing

The redevelopment seeks to transform the area into a thriving hub, boosting footfall and setting the stage for further town centre improvements. If the report is approved by Cabinet, Phase 1 of the project would see detailed designs submitted for planning approval in Spring 2025.

Cllr Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council, welcomed the report: "We took possession of Westgate Retail Park to ensure a brighter future for the whole of Basildon Town Centre. We have moved quickly to set out clear proposals for the site and I'm grateful to KCA for their support.

"Our borough is at the forefront of regeneration in the South East and this administration is ready to seize the opportunity. We are bringing new opportunities, prosperity and life back to our largest town centre. This is what we mean when we say Believe in Basildon."

The report is included in the agenda for Monday's Cabinet meeting, which you can view on the council's website - Basildon Council - Agenda for Cabinet on Monday, 9th December, 2024, 7.00 p.m.. The meeting will be livestreamed from 7pm.
