In the news: "Shop Local!" - Council Leader Calls on Residents to Support Local Businesses ahead of Small Business Saturday

Whether shopping online or in-person, every purchase makes a difference to the local economy.

Councillor Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council, is calling on borough residents to shop local this weekend in aid of Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is a nationwide campaign to support small businesses across the country, taking place on the first Saturday of December each year.

Basildon Borough has a long history of flourishing small businesses, boasting large numbers of start-ups providing unique goods and services right across the borough.

For every pound spent in local businesses, nearly two thirds stays within the local economy - helping to create more jobs, opportunities and sustainability in our high streets. Whether shopping online or in-person, every purchase makes a difference to the local economy.

Councillor Gavin Callaghan said: "Behind every small business is a story, a dream and a family; someone who every single day takes a risk and pursues their passion. These businesses create jobs for local people, they keep our economy thriving and add something special to our community. Let's celebrate their hard work by shopping local every day.

"With Storm Darragh set to bring a windy and rainy weekend, we're encouraging residents to beat the weather and celebrate Small Business Saturday early. So, whether you pop into one of our unique shops, drop into a local pub for a pint, or enjoy a meal at a local restaurant - let's support the heartbeat of our borough."
