In the news: Basildon Council puts community safety centre stage with 'Making Basildon Borough Safer' campaign
Basildon Council is marking the launch of Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week with a new campaign to highlight community safety issues, and the actions the council is taking to make Basildon safer.
'Making Basildon Borough Safer' will remind residents how they can report instances of anti-social behaviour, and signposts to vital support services for those affected by domestic abuse and violence against women and girls.
The campaign links together a period of national and international activity set to raise awareness of community safety issues, starting with Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week from 18 to 24 November.
Basildon Council is hosting a series of pop-up events across the borough to share crime prevention materials and to speak to local people about issues in their area.
Events are scheduled as follows:
Monday 18 November 12pm to 4pm - Eastgate Shopping Centre, outside Starbucks
Wednesday 20 November 11am to 1pm - Pitsea Market
Wednesday 20 November 6pm to 8pm - Laindon Community Centre
Thursday 21 November 10am to 12pm - Wickford High Street
Thursday 21 November 1pm to 3pm - Beech Community Centre
Friday 22 November 10am to 12pm - Community Hub, Billericay
Friday 22 November 1.30pm to 3.30pm - Felmores Community Centre
Cllr Melissa McGeorge, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Enforcement, said: "Community safety is a vital issue that affects every single one of us - and we each have opportunities to make our borough a safer place every single day. Whether that's by reporting incidents of anti-social behaviour or challenging the threat of violence against women and girls, we can and must act to protect those at risk of harm.
"This Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week, come along and speak to the team about ways you can report incidents of anti-social behaviour. The team are ready to support you.
"This campaign is a chance to stop and reflect on the work we are doing but the work must continue year-round if we are truly to make a difference in our communities. Together we are Making Basildon Borough Safer."
Later this month, the council will mark 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, beginning with White Ribbon Day on Monday 25 November. Residents are invited to join the walk of remembrance, which will begin in St Martins Square at 10.45am on Monday 25 November.
On Thursday 28 November, Basildon Council will also formally launch the Women's Safety Charter, bringing together local businesses and community organisations who have pledged to be safe spaces for women and girls.
The 'Making Basildon Borough Safer' campaign follows a range of recent activity, including the relaunch of the Hate Incident Reporting Centre (HIRC) at the Basildon Centre in October and the designation of the Basildon Centre as a J9 safe space for those fleeing domestic abuse.
Residents can report an incident of anti-social behaviour (ASB) on the council's website: www.basildon.gov.uk/article/345/Anti-social-Behaviour-ASB-and-Nuisance
