In the news: The Crunch returns to a location near you!

The Crunch service returns by popular demand to bring additional waste services to your neighbourhood

Each of the council's Area Committees have agreed the return of the Crunch - one in each area of Basildon, Billericay, Laindon and Lee Chapel North, Pitsea, Westley Heights and Wickford.

The council's waste collection vehicles will visit the following six locations on Saturday 23 November 2024 from 9am to 12.30pm:

  • Billericay - Little Burstead
  • Wickford - The Wick Country Park
  • Laindon - (tbc)
  • Westley Heights - Car Park 12 in Cherrydown West
  • Basildon - Rear of Jolly Friar Pub
  • Pitsea - Chalvedon Hall Car Park

The decision follows a successful initiative throughout July and August to clean up local estates. The Crunch (council waste collection vehicles) visited each of the council's main towns, allowing residents to get rid of any built-up waste and dispose of all bulky items for free. The initiative supported thousands of residents and cleared 332 tonnes of waste - the equivalent of 30 double decker buses.

Basildon Council is committed to providing efficient and sustainable waste and recycling collection services across the borough.

Cllr Aidan McGurran, Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure welcomed the news: "The Crunch was so popular, ever since Crunch Month finished people have been asking can we have more. So, I am delighted to be able to announce the return of the Crunch this month, bringing waste services back to your neighbourhoods.

"Crunch Month was an overwhelming success as thousands of residents came out each week to dispose of their waste and bulky items for free. People helped family, friends, neighbours, and those that weren't able to access the Crunch - demonstrating a real community spirit"

Cllr Jack Ferguson, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Community said: "It's fantastic to see the Crunch officially return later this month after its huge success this summer, thanks to the support of our Area Committees. The committees provide a real opportunity for Ward Members to reflect the wants and needs of their communities in the decisions we make as a council."
