In the news: Councillors agree plans for review of security in Basildon

The review will form the basis of a robust improvement plan for Basildon town centre

With exciting new plans being brought forward for regeneration, Basildon Council's Cabinet has agreed plans for a full review of the security arrangements in the town centre.

The review includes an audit of CCTV arrangements and a review of the perception of crime in urban areas.

Councillors will also lead walkthroughs of Basildon town centre to engage with local people and businesses to better understand their safety and security concerns. The results of this work will form the basis of a robust town centre security improvement plan.

At the Cabinet meeting, councillors confirmed that the review could begin immediately, and the council will work with Essex Police, community groups and other agencies to gather the data required.

Following the review, plans for improvement will be presented to councillors at a future meeting of Basildon Council's Cabinet.

Councillor Melissa McGeorge, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Enforcement, said: "As we develop new and exciting plans for regeneration, it's vital we reflect on local people's perception of crime, safety and security in Basildon town centre.

"We believe in Basildon, and we want to make sure that the town centre is welcoming to everyone who would live, work and visit here.

"To do that we need to understand how local people and businesses really feel and I'm pleased these proposals have been agreed, which will ensure we set out realistic measures for improvement later this year."
