In the news: Crunch Month launches across Basildon Borough

The much needed month-long initiative is part of ongoing work to clean up local estates

Basildon Council will launch a brand new mobile waste collection service - known as Crunch Month - visiting the borough's five towns on dates throughout July and August.

For a five-week period, the Crunch (council waste collection vehicles) will visit each of the council's main towns and allow residents to get rid of any built up waste. The service will also allow residents to dispose of all bulky items for free.

The initiative is the start of a programme to fundamentally review the council's waste and recycling services and reduce fly tip across the borough.

The mobile waste collection service will visit 25 locations across five dates - one location in each of the borough's five towns per week.

The free service will be available at the following locations on Saturday 13 July, from 9am to 12.30pm:

  • Radford Crescent - Car Park, Billericay, CM12 0BW
  • Alderney Gardens (rear of shops), Wickford, SS11 7JP
  • Plough and Tractor Pub, Laindon, SS15 5HG
  • Barstable Club, Long Riding, Basildon, SS14 1PD
  • Swanstead, Pitsea, SS16 4PE

A full list of dates and locations for the Crunch service will be published on the council's website - www.basildon.gov.uk/crunchmonth

Alongside the new Crunch service, the council's waste teams will be targeting hotspots around the borough to clear any dumped rubbish, litter pick, and tidy up footpaths. All teams will be fully focused on this reset throughout the borough.

Cllr Aidan McGurran, Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, said: "We've seen how mounds of rubbish have built up on the streets of our estates, and residents - quite rightly - have told us all about it. None of us should have to put up with this and we are going to end this now.

"Crunch Month is your chance to reset the mistakes that were made previously. I know you want to have pride in in your neighbourhoods - and we are going to make that happen.

"Myself, and the rest of the administration are working hard to fix the bins and this is just the start of the journey. Watch this space. We will soon be bringing forward exciting proposals to the Cabinet to create a waste and recycling system that work for you."
