The over 50's activity membership

The George Hurd Activity Centre is a lively, friendly and bustling daytime venue for the new town's older generation to meet and socialise in the very heart of Basildon. Originally established in 1969 by Councillor George Hurd, the centre has been established in a purpose built complex since May 2008.


Facilities, activities, entertainment and day trips

  • Card crafts, keep fit, yoga, bridge, whist, strictly fit steps, Pilates, seated keep fit, flower arranging, indoor bowls, darts, chess, bingo, table tennis, computer classes and much much more - Most classes still have places available, please contact the office for details.
  • Games room, lounge and dining room 
  • Hairdresser: Monday and Friday
  • Social events
  • Tea Bar
  • Hot Meal Mondays and Fish & Chip Fridays (toasties are available Tues, Weds & Thurs)
  • Day trips throughout the year, e.g. London Shows, Seaside trips, River Cruise, Cream Teas and Castle tours.

  • Mon-Fri: 9.00 - 16:30 (closed on bank holidays).

Specialised transport to and from the activity centre

Membership

Membership is open to anyone over the age of 50.

Membership fees (April to March):

  • £52 per household for Basildon residents
  • £54 per household Residents outside the borough

To apply for a membership, please complete and return the following application form:

Please return your completed application form to the George Hurd Activity Centre, Members' Committee Office in person so that you can arrange payment of your membership fees. Once fee payment has been arranged our staff will prepare your Membership Pack and welcome you as a member of the George Hurd Activity Centre.

The members' committee

The George Hurd Activity Centre supports a members' committee. The members' committee meets regularly to put forward suggestions for day trips, events and entertainment.
