Information for Candidates and Agents - UK Parliamentary General Election - Thursday, 4 July 2024

It is the responsibility of Basildon Council to administer the poll for the Basildon & Billericay Constituency. 

The Acting Returning Officer for the Basildon & Billericay Parliamentary Constituency is Paula Deery, Basildon Borough Council.

If you are standing as a candidate in a different constituency then you will need to contact the relevant council to submit your nomination paper, agent appointment forms and any request forms. 

Rochford District Council will be administering the Rayleigh & Wickford Constituency. 

Thurrock Council will be administering the South Basildon & East Thurrock Constituency. 

Castle Point Council will be administering the Castle Point Constituency.

When is the deadline for submitting nomination papers?

The deadline for submitting nomination papers is 4pm on Friday, 7 June 2024. 

Where can I get further guidance for candidates and agents?

When will the verification and counting of votes take place?

The verification and counting of the votes will take place immediately following the close of poll on Thursday, 4 July at 10.00pm at The Basildon Sporting Village, Cranes Farm Road, Basildon, SS14 3GR. 

What are the deadlines for appointing various agents?

The deadline for advising the Acting Returning Officer of the appointment of election agents is 4pm on Friday, 7 June 2024.

The deadline for advising the Acting Returning Officer of the appointment of the polling and counting agents is Thursday, 27 June 2024.  You can notify the Returning Officer of these appointments by using the form that is available in the nomination pack or by email to elections@basildon.gov.uk.

When will postal vote opening sessions take place?

Postal vote opening sessions will take place on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, 25 June 2024
  • Wednesday, 26 June 2024
  • Thursday, 27 June 2024
  • Friday, 28 June 2024
  • Monday, 1 July 2024
  • Wednesday, 3 July 2024 

All the above sessions will take place at The Basildon Centre commencing at 10.00am.

The above session will take place at The Basildon Centre commencing at 1.00pm.

There will also be a postal vote opening session on Thursday, 4 July 2024 at the count venue starting at 10.00pm. The count venue is the Basildon Sporting Village, Cranes Farm Road, Basildon, SS14 3GR.

What are the expenses limits for candidates?

The expenses limit for candidates is £11,390 + 8 pence per registered parliamentary elector as of the date of publication of Notice of Election. The eligible electorate was 75,815 and therefore the expense limit for the Basildon and Billericay Constituency is £17,455.20.
