In the news: Planning permission granted for new healthcare facility in Basildon
A new healthcare facility in Eastgate, Basildon has been granted permission for a change of use at a meeting of Basildon Council's Planning Committee on Wednesday 21 February 2024.
The former Debenhams retail unit in Eastgate, Basildon will be converted to a new healthcare facility following the decision.
The new centre will bring vital services to the heart of Basildon Town Centre with the expectation of reducing waiting times for diagnostic appointments and treatment.
It is anticipated that the centre will provide facilities for minor surgery, endoscopy and ophthalmology through to major surgery such as knee and hip replacements. The health centre will also offer comprehensive diagnostics suites with provision for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerised tomography (CT) scans as well as patient accommodation.
The facility will include consultation rooms, retail space, reception areas, theatre rooms, recovery areas and bed spaces for in-patients.
Councillor Jeff Henry, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing, Leisure, Arts and Culture said "The new healthcare facility will bring the opportunity for a wealth of enhanced benefits to people in Basildon and surrounding areas. The centre itself will bring increased footfall to the town centre and a significant boost to the local economy.
"I am pleased this exciting project has taken this important step and I look forward to seeing residents benefit."
The decision comes just two weeks after Basildon Council also approved plans for a new Community Diagnostic Centre in Pitsea. Those plans will now be put to the Cabinet at Basildon Council and Essex County Council for final approval.
Leader of Basildon Council, Cllr Andrew Baggott, welcomed the news: "These developments are fantastic news for our borough, bringing much-needed facilities to local people and reducing wait times for those in need of treatment. Thanks to our strong partnership with NHS England we are improving access to high quality healthcare, regenerating our town centres and boosting our local economy. I look forward to seeing these projects move forward."
