In the News: Council reaffirms commitment to keeping the borough clean and tidy
Basildon Council remains steadfast in its efforts to maintain a clean and tidy borough by reminding residents that fly-tipping is a criminal offence, punishable by a fine or potential prosecution.
In just the past month, the council received 1,034 reports of fly-tipping or dumped waste, all of which were investigated and cleared. Over the course of last year, officers conducted 2,739 fly-tipping investigations, resulting in 137 Fixed Penalty Notices and 13 successful prosecutions.
Recently, one individual was sentenced to 40 hours of community service for fly-tipping, another was fined £1,000, and a joint operation with Essex Police to inspect waste carriers led to an arrest and ongoing investigations.
Cllr Aidan McGurran, Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, emphasised: "It's the responsibility of all residents to dispose of their waste properly using all of the available services. Fly-tipping is a serious crime, and we will continue to take strong action against those who break the law.
"We've made a promise to improve local services, and we're delivering on that. We've increased the number of teams tackling fly-tips, removed over 200 dumped shopping trolleys, reinstated the Crunch service, and collected 114 tonnes of waste from households in March alone.
"We've also invested £2 million in our waste and recycling services, and starting April 28, we'll be introducing weekly collections. We are committed to doing even more, leaving no excuse for fly-tipping or illegal waste dumping in our streets and communities."
Residents can report a fly-tip here and can also take their extra waste to Barleylands Recycling Centre
