In the News: Local man receives 40-hour Community Order for fly-tipping offence

A Basildon man has been convicted of fly-tipping and sentenced to a Community Order, which includes 40 hours of unpaid work in the community.

A Basildon man has been convicted of fly-tipping and sentenced to a Community Order, which includes 40 hours of unpaid work in the community.

The man appeared at Basildon Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, where he pleaded guilty to fly-tipping under Sections 33 and 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

The judge considered the offence serious and initially imposed a sentence of 60 hours of community service. However, this was reduced to 40 hours due to the man's admission of guilt. Additionally, he was ordered to pay a £114 victim surcharge and £85 in costs.

Councillor Aidan McGurran, Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, stated:

"Fly-tipping is a criminal act and those responsible can face fines and prosecution. There is no justification for fly-tipping, and it will not be tolerated in our borough. It's not only disrespectful to the environment but also to residents who take pride in their communities and dispose of waste responsibly.

"To the few who think they can get away with it in our area—beware. We will find you, prosecute you, and impose fines.

"A big thank you to our teams who have worked diligently to investigate and bring this case to court."
