In the news: Basildon Town Centre Regeneration: we want your views on the transformation plans

Basildon Council is inviting local residents and businesses to share their views on the transformation of Basildon Town Centre, as the regeneration project reaches a major milestone with works now underway at Market Square.

The proposed masterplan is designed to shape the future development of the Town Centre, and it's important to gather feedback from all stakeholders, partners and residents.

Visible changes have already started taking place, with Chapelgate, Great Oaks, and Market Square undergoing significant improvements. Public realm upgrades, including enhanced lighting and urban greening initiatives, are also in progress, contributing to the town's rejuvenation.

Councillor Adele Brown, Cabinet Member for Planning & Infrastructure, commented: "I'm excited to see significant progress at the Market Square site, with hoardings now in place for the removal of the canopy, marking the first step toward the full demolition, which is set to begin this month. This is a key milestone in our wider regeneration plans, laying the groundwork for transformative changes.

"This work is part of our ongoing commitment to regenerate our town centres in 2025. The launch of the new town centre masterplan consultation, along with major infrastructure projects like improved lighting and greening initiatives, will pave the way for a more vibrant and modern town centre.

"The development of the new hospital in Eastgate and efforts to improve community safety will also play a key role in creating a welcoming, thriving space for visitors from across the region. I will encourage as many people as possible to share their views."

The council hopes that the regeneration plans will provide the right conditions for private investment in the town centre, stimulating further growth and revitalisation.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to contribute their opinions to help shape the future of Basildon. The consultation is now open, and feedback can be provided by visiting https://basildonlocalplan.commonplace.is/en-GB/proposals/basildon-town-centre-masterplan/step1. The consultation will close on Monday 14 April.

This is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Basildon Town Centre, and your input will help make it a better place for everyone.
