In the news: Basildon Council Strengthens Longstanding Partnership with Leonardo

Senior officials from Basildon Council met senior management at Leonardo's in Basildon, to reaffirm the positive partnership between the local authority and the renowned engineering firm. The meeting, held at the company's Sigma House facility, highlighted their significant contribution to the regional economy and technological innovation.

The Council delegation included Councillor Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council; Councillor Jessica Power, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills & Local Economy; Gary Jones, the newly appointed Chief Executive of Basildon Council; and Christine Lyons, Executive Director of Growth & Partnerships. They were welcomed by Chris Axcell, Senior Vice President at Leonardo, and Chris Lines, Vice President of Product & Business, who has been the Council's longstanding liaison with the company.

Leonardo, a global leader in aerospace, defence, and security, has been a pillar of Basildon's industrial landscape since its site was first established here in 1954, when it was formerly known as Marconi. The Basildon site has evolved into a hub of advanced technological development, employing more than 600 professionals dedicated to cutting-edge defence and security solutions.

Councillor Jessica Power praised the collaboration between Basildon Council and Leonardo, saying: "Leonardo has a deep commitment to innovation and community engagement, making them an invaluable partner for Basildon. Their ongoing support of our skills agenda and participation in strategic boards underscores their dedication to the region's growth and prosperity. We are excited to see this partnership flourish further, driving forward job creation, technological advancement, and economic development."

Chris Axcell, Senior Vice President at Leonardo, equally enthusiastic about the relationship, said: "Leonardo has been innovating in Basildon for over 70 years, delivering exciting and rewarding careers for people in the local area.  We are proud of our work to encourage young people to take up Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects and look forward to maintaining our close partnership with Basildon Council and the local community to invest in the future."

The Leonardo site in Basildon not only excels in high- tech engineering, it also contributes actively to local initiatives.

The company holds Gold accreditation from Basildon Council's Good Employer Charter and is a key participant in several strategic boards, including the Basildon Business Leaders Exec Board and the Greater Essex Business Board.

The visit reaffirmed a mutual commitment to fostering innovation, skills development, and community growth. Both parties expressed optimism for their future collaboration, that will continue to enhance Basildon's position as a centre of technological excellence.
