Monday 27 January 2025 marks Holocaust Memorial Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp

Mayor of Basildon, Councillor Allan Davies pays his respects this Holocaust Memorial Day: "On behalf of Basildon Borough Council, I would like to pay my respects and remember the horrendous events that took place 80 years ago at the largest Nazi death camp. We remember the millions of men, women, and children who were brutally murdered during the Holocaust, as well as those who suffered during subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. We honour their memory and their stories.
"On this Holocaust Memorial Day, let us reflect on the past, stand united in the present, and work together to create a future where hatred has no place."
Each year, people from across the UK take part in the Light the Darkness national moment for Holocaust Memorial Day. At 8pm on Monday 27 January, people across the nation will light candles and put them safely in their windows to remember those who were murdered for who they were stand against prejudice and hatred today.
