In the news: Basildon Council Reinforces its Commitment to Tackling Domestic Abuse and Gender-Based Violence

White Ribbon Day, observed on 25 November, marks the global campaign "It Starts with Men", which encourages men to take responsibility for changing the attitudes and actions that perpetuate a climate of fear and violence for women. This year's theme calls on men to hold themselves and each other accountable, fostering a cultural shift towards safety and respect.

This year we remember the lives lost to domestic abuse at a walk of remembrance through Basildon Town Centre. Residents are invited to the walk in St Martins Square at 10.45am on Monday 25 November, which will include a two-minute silence to remember victims. 

This year alone, Basildon Council has supported over 300 families/individuals who have experienced domestic abuse - providing advice, emotional support, assistance with securing refuge placements or alternative safe accommodation, and liaison with internal and external agencies. 

In recognition of its ongoing efforts to combat violence against women and girls, Basildon Council was recently awarded White Ribbon Accreditation. The award acknowledges the council's commitment in supporting victims of domestic abuse and gender-based violence, as well as its work to educate residents on how to challenge such behaviours. 

Earlier this year, the Deputy Mayor of Basildon Borough, Councillor Victoria Joseph, was appointed as the Ending Domestic and Sexual Abuse Champion, she said: "Around 1.4 million women in the UK experience abuse each year. This needs to change, and it starts with all of us challenging harmful behaviors in our communities and supporting survivors in their journey to safety. We are fully committed to being a place where victims can find help, and where we work together to prevent abuse before it starts." 

"This White Ribbon Day, let's show that Basildon stands united against violence. We must continue to break the silence, educate, and offer support to those who need it. Our borough is a place where victims can find the safety and care they deserve. Together we are making Basildon Borough safer." 

As part of the council's commitment to victim support, the Basildon Centre has been designated a 'J9 safe space' to help those experiencing domestic abuse to seek help at the earliest opportunity. Victims of domestic abuse can visit the Basildon Centre, St. Martin's Square, Basildon, SS14 1DL and quote 'J9' for immediate support. Members of staff are trained to recognise, respond and refer anyone who is experiencing domestic abuse at the earliest opportunity. 

Throughout 16 Days of Activism, Basildon Council is hosting pop-up events for residents to learn more about the services available and to pick up crime prevention materials. The pop-up events are scheduled as follows: 

• Eastgate Shopping Centre - Tuesday 26 November - 11am to 3pm 

• Billericay Train Station - Wednesday 27 November - 4pm to 7pm 

• Wickford Market - Thursday 28 November - 10am to 1pm 

Additionally, Basildon Council and Essex Police will conduct joint patrols in identified hotspot locations where women have expressed feeling unsafe, as part of the 'Operation Rebecca' initiative. 

On Thursday 28 November, Basildon Council will also formally launch the Women's Safety Charter, bringing together local businesses and community organisations who have pledged to be safe spaces for women and girls. 

These initiatives are just part of the council's 'Making Basildon Borough Safer' campaign that reminds residents how they can report instances of anti-social behaviour, and signposts to vital support services for those affected by domestic abuse and violence against women and girls.
