In the news: New statue to honour D-Day veteran, Don Sheppard, as borough remembers local heroes

The Leader of Basildon Council has unveiled plans for a new memorial statue honouring the life and service of local World War II D-Day veteran, Don Sheppard.

The announcement was made in a special video by Councillor Gavin Callaghan, Leader of Basildon Council, as the borough commemorates Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day events in coming days.

Announcing the plans to honour Don Sheppard's legacy, Gavin Callaghan spoke of the importance of preserving the memory of those who served our borough:

"Basildon New Town was born 75 years ago out of the need to provide better homes for the heroes that braved fascism and fought valiantly for our freedoms during World War II. Since then, the town and indeed the borough have continued to send their sons and daughters to fight in conflicts from the Falklands to Iraq to Afghanistan.

"Every year we come together to remember and reflect on those who sacrificed so much for our freedoms. As those generations become part of our history rather than our present, it's vital we find new ways to remember - that's why I'm thrilled and humbled to announce we will be building a statue of local hero Don Sheppard."

"Don's story is of course not unique but his service - from D Day to liberating a concentration camp - is emblematic of the combat and humanitarian role our forces play across the world. That role continues today in our proud record of service in Basildon borough. Don's story is part of our history but his message of peace and confronting fascism is one that must also guide our future."

The new statue will be located in Basildon town centre.

The announcement comes as the borough joins the nation in marking Remembrance Sunday. Today Basildon Borough will pay its respects to the Armed Forces Community at special events across the borough

The events will include marches featuring local Armed Forces members, Veterans, Cadet groups, as well as emergency service units. The services will feature speeches and wreath laying before a minute's silence at 11am.

All are welcome to attend and pay their respects at the services.

The events will be held at the following locations:

  • St Martins Square, Basildon - 10.30am
  • Billericay High Street - 10am
  • Laindon War Memorial - 3pm
  • Howard Park, Pitsea - 10.50am
  • St Chad's Church, Vange - 10.50am
  • Wickford High Street to Wickford Memorial Park - 10am

Mayor of Basildon, Councillor Allan Davies, will pay his respects at the service in Basildon, he said: "Today, we remember the brave men and women who selflessly served our country. It's a time to reflect on their courage, resilience, and dedication, which have shaped the freedoms we enjoy today.

"As Mayor of Basildon, it is not only my duty but also my honour to mark this important day alongside our residents and veterans. Each event serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those in the Armed Forces Community. This year, we also pay special tribute to Donald Sheppard, who's remarkable life epitomised these values. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we gather to show our respect."
