Information for Voters - Basildon Borough Council Election - Thursday, 2 May 2024

Polling day for the Basildon Borough Council election is Thursday, 2 May 2024, between the hours of 7.00am and 10.00pm.

Elections for all Borough Councillors will take place in all 14 of the Borough's Wards. 

The Returning Officer for the elections is Scott Logan, Chief Executive of Basildon Borough Council.

When will the election take place?

The election will take place on Thursday, 2 May 2024 between the hours of 7.00am and 10.00pm.

How do I find out where my polling station is?

Your poll card will detail your polling station. 

Will I receive a poll card?

Yes - If you are registered to vote you should have received your poll card by Monday, 1 April 2024.  However, if you registered to vote after Friday, 8 March, your poll card will be posted mid-April. Each member of the household who is eligible to vote should receive a poll card providing further information on how they can vote.

You do not need to take your poll card with you to vote but it is very helpful to do so.

Do I need photographic ID to vote in a polling station?

If you are voting in person, including if you are acting as a proxy on behalf of another individual, you will be required to produce an accepted form of photographic ID to prove your identity before you will be issued with a ballot paper. Only original documents are accepted; scanned images or copies will not be accepted however expired documents are accepted if the photo is still a current likeness. When is the last date that I can register to vote at the election on 2 May 2024?

The deadline for registering to vote in this election is Midnight on Tuesday, 16 April 2024.  See Register To Vote for details of how to register to vote at elections.

When is the last date that I can request / amend a postal vote?

The deadline for new applications to vote by post, new applications for a proxy postal vote and also any amendments to existing postal votes and proxy votes is 5pm on Wednesday, 17 April 2024. When is the last date that I can request / amend a proxy vote?

The deadline for new applications for a proxy postal vote and also any amendments to existing postal votes and proxy votes is 5pm Wednesday, 17 April 2024.

The deadline for applications to vote by proxy (except for medical or employment emergency) is 5pm on Wednesday, 24 April 2024.  After 5pm on 24th April if you are unable to vote in person because of a medical condition, illness, disability or due to work reasons you could apply for an emergency proxy up until 5 pm on polling day (Thursday, 2 May 2024) subject to the appropriate attestation being provided. Further information about proxy votes can be found at Apply to Vote by Proxy.

If I have asked for a postal vote, when will I receive it?

The majority of postal votes will be posted on Tuesday, 16 April, however any new applications to vote by post received after Monday, 1 April will be posted on Thursday, 18 April. If you have not received your postal vote by Friday, 26 April you should contact us using the details below.
