Public Consultation - Proposed changes to Local Council Tax Support

Public online consultation between the 22nd September 2017 and 2nd November 2017 - How should Basildon Council fund Local Council Tax Support in 2018/19

What this consultation is about

Each year Basildon Council must decide if changes should to be made to its Local Council Tax Support Scheme for working age applicants in the Borough.

The views and opinions we receive from members of the public, in response to this consultation, will help us shape the Local Council Tax Support Scheme that will be effective from 1st April 2018.

When are we consulting?

The six week consultation period will commence on 22nd September 2017 and end on 2nd November 2017.

Key features of the current scheme (2017/2018)

The Local Council Tax Support Scheme helps both working age and pension age residents with the cost of their Council Tax bills.

If you are of pension credit age...

  • the level of support you receive from the Local Council Tax Support Scheme is assessed in broadly the same way as under the old Council Tax Benefit scheme.

If you are of working age and entitled to Local Council Tax Support the following key features will apply:

  • All working age claimants pay a minimum of 25% of their Council Tax bill
  • The maximum period a claim for LCTS can be back dated is one month
  • There is a flat rate non-dependant deduction of £10 regardless of income or savings
  • There is a £2.50 per week minimum level of entitlement.

Details of proposed changes to the current scheme are included as a part of the online consultation.

This is a public consultation and as such it is open to anyone who would like to respond.

The views and suggestions you submit will help us design the Local Council Tax Support Scheme for 2018/19.

The consultation will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

What happens after the consultation process?

Following the consultation process reports will be presented to the Basildon Borough Council Policy and Resources Committee and to full Council. These reports will detail the results of the consultation and put forward proposals for the Local Council Tax Support scheme in 2018/19.
