Basildon Business Education Consortium (BBEC)
BBG's volunteer project - Helping our young people be better prepared to enter the world of work
The Basildon Business Education Consortium (BBEC) was launched by the BBG in 2011. The Consortium was set up to help the borough's young people become better prepared to enter the world of work and employment.
Through the BBEC, which is chaired by Noel Kelleway of Rickard Keen LLP and coordinated by the Council's Economic Development Team; businesses, schools, and colleges are working together to deliver a range of activities to raise the skills and aspirations of the next generation of workers.
Get involved in voluntary activities provided by BBEC
- providing business speakers for events
- providing reading and numeracy volunteers in schools
- providing school governors
- supporting mock interview events
- supporting parents' evenings
- supporting career fairs
- supporting the Employability for Life Charter
Participating business people have found the group to be very fulfilling.
Rob Crouch, a volunteer from Selex ES who has read with children once a week at Pitsea Junior School, says:
"...supporting a local school has indirectly helped promote our company leading to numerous new business contacts, and I know for a fact that the children we read to don't stop talking about us, which can only be positive... and, of course, it does make you feel good when you have helped someone else. In fact I think the whole group, children and adults are better off for doing this."
