Adapt Your Home - Council Tenants

In partnership with Essex County Council Social Care direct, we provide a home adaptations service for elderly and disabled council tenants.

The aids and adaptations service is invaluable in enabling us to help our elderly and disabled tenants to continue living independently in their own homes. This includes our wheelchair medical assessment, which is done by our his service is vital for helping our elderly and disabled tenants continue living independently in their own homes. 

Basildon council tenants can apply for either a home aid or adaptations, or a Housing Transfer Scheme. 

Basildon council leaseholders can apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant, towards the costs of installing adaptations for disabled tenants.

For elderly and disabled tenants who need to move to a smaller or more suitable property we operate the Housing Transfer Plus Scheme.

Applying for a home adaptation 

Before any aids and adaptations can be installed, applicants must complete a qualifying assessment. 

Applications for major work ie. stair lifts are assessed by fully trained staff from the Essex County Council Social Care Direct Scheme. 

Applications for minor work ie. handrails and lever taps are assessed in-house. 

When applying, our Aids and Adaptations team will be able to advise you on which team will assess your application.

After your application has been approved 

After your application is approved, arrangements will be made for contractors to begin work. Often, there is a high demand for adaptations and you will join a waiting list. In this instance, we will update you on the waiting time. 

Our contractors will contact you to arrange a convenient time for work to be carried out.

  • Specialised toilet
  • Fixed toilet frames
  • Wheelchair ramps

  • Graded floor showers
  • Levelled door thresholds
  • Mopstick banister rails
  • Lever handled taps
  • Flashing light indicator systems
  • Over bath showers
  • Extra power sockets for specialised equipment and
  • Kitchen adjustments
