Proxy Vote - Appoint Someone To Vote On Your Behalf

If you can't vote in person, one option is to cast your vote by proxy - this means getting someone else to vote on your behalf.

From Tuesday 31st October, some proxy vote applications can now be made online. You will need to provide your date of birth, national insurance number, and signature as part of your application.

You can apply to appoint somebody as proxy to vote on your behalf permanently if:

  • you have a physical incapacity
  • you are an overseas voter, a Crown Servant or a member of Her Majesty's Armed Forces
  • your employment or studying means that you are unable to go to a polling station on the day of an election

You can apply to appoint somebody as proxy to vote on your behalf in a single election if:

  • you are unable to go to a polling station for a particular election, for example because you are away on holiday.

PLEASE NOTE:  You must tell the person you appoint as proxy to vote on your behalf which candidate(s) you wish to vote for.

The person you appoint as proxy to vote on your behalf

The person you wish to appoint as proxy to vote on your behalf:

  • must be 18 years of age or older
  • must be eligible to vote in the election or referendum
  • must be registered to vote in the UK
  • They can be appointed as a proxy for a maximum of two UK resident electors and two overseas electors

If the person you wish to appoint as proxy to vote on your behalf cannot attend your registered polling station on election day, they can apply to cast your vote by means of a postal vote.
