UK Parliamentary Election - Information for Candidates and Agents

An Election for Members of Parliament in three constituencies that fall within the Basildon Borough will take place on Thursday, 8 June 2017, between the hours of 7.00am to 10.00pm.

The (Acting) Returning Officer at Basildon Borough Council is responsible for the conduct of elections in the Basildon and Billericay and South Basildon and East Thurrock Constituencies. The (Acting) Returning Officer at Rochford is responsible for the conduct of elections in the Rayleigh and Wickford Constituency.

This page will be updated during the course of the election with relevant information.

Detailed below are some frequently asked questions in connection with th election. For any further information please call the council offices on 01268 533333 or email elections@basildon.gov.uk

What is the period for submitting nomination papers?

Nomination papers can be submitted between the hours of 10.00am till 4.00pm on the day following the publication of the notice of election which is due to be published on 8 May 2017. The deadline for submitting nomination papers was 4 pm Thursday, 11 May 2017.

Access to the electoral register and absent voting lists.

Candidates can request copies of the electoral register and the absent voter list once you officially become a candidate. To obtain these, you must make a formal written request to the Electoral Services Department.

Candidates can only use the data contained in the Electoral Register and Absent Voter Lists for permitted purposes:

  • To complete the nomination form
  • To help you campaign
  • To check that donations/loans are permissible.

What are the deadlines for appointing various agents?

The deadline for advising the (Acting) Returning Officer of the appointment of the polling and counting agents is Thursday, 1 June 2017.  You can notify the (Acting) Returning Officer of these appointments by using the form that is available in the nomination packs or by email to elections@basildon.gov.uk

The deadline for advising the (Acting) Returning Officer of the appointment of the sub-agents is Tuesday, 6 June 2017. You can notify the (Acting) Returning Officer of these appointments by using the form that is available in the nomination packs or by email to elections@basildon.gov.uk

Postal vote agents must be appointed and notified to the (Acting) Returning Officer prior to the session they will be attending.

When will the verification and counting of votes take place?

The verification and counting of votes for the UK Parliamentary Election will take place on Thursday, 8 June 2017, immediately following the close of poll at 10.00pm at the Basildon Sporting Village, Cranes Farm Road, Basildon.

When will postal vote opening sessions take place?

Postal vote opening sessions will take place on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, 30 May 2017
  • Wednesday, 31 May 2017
  • Thursday, 1 June2017
  • Friday, 2 June 2017
  • Monday, 5 June 2017
  • Tuesday, 6 June 2017
  • Wednesday, 7 June 2017
  • Thursday, 8 June 2017

All the above sessions will take place in the St George's Suite at The Basildon Centre commencing at 10.00am with the exception of Thursday, 8 June which will start at 1.30pm.

The above evening session will take place at the Basildon Sporting Village commencing at 9.00pm following the close of poll.
