Council Tax - Empty And Unfurnished Properties
Properties that are empty and unfurnished may qualify for a Council Tax discount
From 1st April 2015 the following discount applies to unoccupied and unfurnished properties:
- All dwellings that are unoccupied and unfurnished may receive a discount of 50% for a continuous period of up to 3 months. After the 3 month discount period has ended Council Tax will be charged at the full rate.
*Please Note: this discount applies to the property and not the liable person.
From 1st April 2015 the following additional levy applies to 'long term' unoccupied properties:
- All dwellings that have been empty long term (more than 2 years) will be charged an additional 50% premium. This means Council Tax will be payable at the full rate plus an additional 50% charge.

Please be advised; failure to notify us of a change in your circumstances within 21 days, or applying for a discount or exemption you are not entitled to, will result in a penalty of up to £280 being issued.
