Elections - Electoral Register

The Electoral Register is a list of all the people in the Basildon Borough who have registered to vote in elections.

Registering to vote

Everybody in the Borough must apply to be included on the Electoral Register. Do not assume that your name will automatically appear on the register because you pay Council Tax. For further information regarding being included on the Electoral Register, please visit Individual Electoral Registration.

You can only vote in an election if your name appears in the register of electors. If you wish to check whether you are on the register, please contact (telephone 01268 533333).

You have to apply to be included in the Electoral Register. As long as you are eligible, you can apply to register to vote at any time of the year.

You can and should register to vote if:

  • You're eligible to vote but not already registered
  • You have been registered but have changed address
  • You have been registered but your name has changed.

There are special registration forms for British citizens living overseas, members of HM Forces, Crown Servants and person with no fixed address - for more information please contact the Electoral Registration Office on 01268 207959 or see Other Elector Information Alternatively you could also visit

The Electoral Register

Using information received from the public, registration officers are required to keep two registers - the electoral register and the open register (also known as the edited register).

The electoral register lists the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote in public elections. The register is used for electoral purposes, such as making sure only eligible people can vote. It is also used for other limited purposes specified in law, such as detecting crime (e.g. fraud), calling people for jury service and checking credit applications.

The open register is an extract of the electoral register, but is not used for elections. It can be bought by any person, company or organisation. For example, it is used by businesses and charities to confirm name and address details. Your name and address will be included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed. Removing your details from the open register does not affect your right to vote.

To remove yourself from the open register please contact us by using the details below.
